• Oswald is on his way to Edmund with a letter from Goneril. He informs Regan that Albany has been persuaded to fight against France.

• Regan is concerned about Goneril's letter to Edmund. She knows that Goneril is her competitor for Edmund's affection.

• Regan wants Oswald to let her look at the letter. Oswald protests.

• Regan wants Oswald to give Edmund some gift from herself. She is aware of the danger of having Gloucester running around the coutryside and tells Oswald that there is advancement for the one who kills him.

• Oswald is keen to oblige.
