Act IV, Scene I

---

• Edgar is just getting to feel that things are about to improve when he sees an old man bringing his blinded, bleeding father towards him. Gloucester does not want to be led by the old man because he is so broken up with his abuse of his son.

• This new turn of events makes Edgar realize that nobody can say that they've experienced the worst.

• Gloucester wants Edgar to lead him to Dover so Edgar must keep his disguise, at least verbally.

• The old man agrees to supply peasant clothing for Edgar and then leaves.

• Edgar sees it a bad trade to have to play fool to sorrow. He feels he can't carry on his disguise any further, and yet he realizes that he has to.

• Gloucester wishes to be led to the white cliffs of Dover from where he will not need any more leading after he jumps to his death.

• Edgar continues his talk of his fiends. Gloucester gives his son his purse, and Edgar leads him towards Dover.
