• Inside Gloucester's castle Gloucester confides in Edmund his plans to aid Lear against his guests' will, and of his letter concerning the arrival of France.

• Again one wonders why Gloucester didn't wonder how or why the letter came to him.

• Edmund, agrees to keep his father's plans concealed from Cornwall but immediately Gloucester leaves, he indicates that he will use this opportunity to get rid of his father.
