SOME COMPUTER ADVICE:

Firstly you must use an AntiVirus program - these days it is a necessity.
I can recommend Norton, goto http://www.symantec.com/cgi-bin/securitycheck.cgi for an online checkup.

Secondly it is a great idea to run the google toolbar as not only is it a useful tool, but it stops those annoying popups, goto http://toolbar.google.com/

Thirdly I would recommend having two email addresses. Have a  "normal" email address but also have a web-based email address such as hotmail or yahoo to be used for posting to online websites. This way all the spam will goto your web-based email instead of your private address, it does not stop the spam but it does help. If you are joining the Rootsweb mailing lists though I would advise using your private email address as the web-based email addresses are not reliable enough for constant emails, I have not received spam from being on Rootsweb mailing lists.

Fourthly, try using a FREE anti-spyware utility like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware -  to clear your computer of adware, spyware, and many other pesky programs at http://www.lavasoft.com/support/download/

And last but not least, if you are uploading your family history database to any websites in the form of a gedcom file REMEMBER to privatise the file first - this will stop you publishing data on living individuals.
