(published by Archive CD
Books): "Elton is a township and parish in the hundred of Salford and union
of Bury, formed February 23rd 1844, from the civil parish of Bury, and extends
in a westerly direction from the town of Bury, the most populous portion of the
township constituting a part of the borough. The manufacture of cotton is the
chief industry of the place, but there are iron foundries and paper works, and
bleaching and dyeing is also carried on. All Saint's Church erected in 1843 is a
large building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of a chancel, nave
transept, and a tower above the chancel containing one bell: the east window is
a memorial to the wife of the late incumbent; others have been placed to Mr and
Mrs Oram of Bury; Mrs Geldard, daughter of John Openshaw esq of Irwell house,
Bury; and one by the Hutchinson family of Radcliffe, as a family memorial; the
interior has been completely restored since 1858; in 1884 an organ chamber was
built, and in 1885 a new organ was placed in it: there are sittings for 720
persons, of which 240 are free. The register dates from the year 1843. The
living is a vicarage net yearly value £400 with residence, in the gift of the
rector of Bury, and held since 1891 by the Rev Charles Primrose Ford BA of Caius
College, Cambridge. The vicarage house, built of local stone was erected in 1863
on an eminence near the church.
