Korumburra Victoria 3950
Dear Mr. Hine,
As a local resident you would understand that country communities occasionally call upon each other when they need assistance. Well we really need your help at short notice. First let me explain that Murray Holderhead passed on your name and told me you were a community spirited person.
Murray thought that as he is unable to attend our local football finals match due to a business commitment, you might stand in for him as a goal umpire. Naturally the full C.G.F.B.A. fee of $ 7.00 would be payable. As you will now appreciate the club is really desperate and we are counting on your good spirit.
There will be a pre match umpires briefing at Bill Rowes home: 12 Daly Crt. Leongatha, on Wednesday September 14th at 7.30pm. If you are unable to arrange a white full-length lab coat and soamble white cap let us know at this meeting. The rules are quite basic and I have attached a copy of them for you to study. I sincerely trust you will give our request your best attention. You may phone me at work at the police station (Ask for Constable Nesmith) after 2.45pm this week if you need to discuss the matter further.
Best wishes Simon Nesmith,
Club Secretary
Australian Rules Football C.G.F.B.A. Goal Umpires Code Section 5.0.
1.0 At all times watch the ball.
1.1 When the ball approaches the goal square stand to "Attention" placing both arms across each other with hands placed on opposite shoulders. This is the Neutral stance.
1.2 As the ball nears the quarterback line run as fast as you can to be as near as practicable to immediately inline with the ball as it passes across the goal line.
2.0 Quickly decide if the ball is:
(A) a Goal {see 2.0.3}
(B) a Behind {see 2.0.2}
(C) Touched {see 2.0.1}
(D) a Miss {see 2.0.4}
(E) if Unsure {see 2.0.5}
2.1 Quickly decide the score and run as fast as possible to be standing between the main goal posts on the boundary line and jump to the "Attention" position facing the match umpire before the whistle is blown.
2.2 As soon as the whistle is sounded signal the score and immediately adopt the Neutral stance. Signaling the score: {2.0.1 Touched} is signaled by tapping your right shoulder 4 times with your left hand if the ball is touched on the right of centre of the goal. This signal is reversed for a touch on the other half of the centre, therefore tap the left shoulder 4 times with the right hand. Then fall to the Neutral stance.
{2.0.2. Behind} is signaled by pointing the forefinger of the left hand and holding the thumb at right angles to it. The hand is quickly raised to shoulder height and then thrust down with the finger remaining parallel to the ground and perpendicular to the goal posts and adjacent to the field umpire. This signal naturally applies to behinds scored on the left side of the goal square. This signal is reversed for Points scored on the right side. Then fall into the Neutral stance.
{2.0.3. Goal} is signaled by simultaneously applying both {2.0.2.Behind} signals at the "Attention" position and immediately adopting the Neutral stance.
{2.0.4. Miss} is signaled by shaking your head vigorously over your left shoulder with eyes toward the field umpire for misses on the left side of the goal square. Both hands should be behind your back during this signal. The signal is reversed for misses on the right side of the Goal Square and the neutral stance is immediately resumed
{2.0.5. Unsure} is signaled by immediately laying on the ground with legs held high in the cycling position rotating both legs rapidly. Resume the Neutral stance after the whistle has blown and the rain of bottles and cans has ceased.
