.
This is the story of Canada's
incredible 850000 vehicle contribution to the Allied war effort in World
War Two including the 409936 CMPs.
- If
you want to purchase a copies of these books, I found the Royal Canadian
Artillery Kitshop to give good service. I am not sure where but they used
to be online. Unfortunately, CANADIAN MILITARY VEHICLE PROFILES is no longer in print but should be available from specialist
second hand military book dealers.
- THE OBSERVER'S FIGHTING VEHICLES DIRECTORY - WORLD WAR II; BART H
VANDERVEEN, OLYSLAGER ORGANISATION; 1972; PUBLISHED BY FREDERICK WARNE
& CO, LONDON . Bart Vanderveen's publications are legendary among military
vehicle enthusiasts as a reference source. This book shows CMPs in service
with many different countries and also makes good reference to the
enormous effort made by the Canadian motor industry in WW2.
- HISTORIC MILITARY VEHICLES DIRECTORY; BART VANDERVEEN; 1989; ISBN
0900913 57 6; PUBLISHED BY "AFTER THE BATTLE",
BATTLE OF BRITAIN PRINTS INTERNATIONAL LTD,
LONDON. Also known
as the "Wheels and Tracks" directory, this publication is
essentially an update of Vanderveen's previous book mentioned above. Both
publications are excellent reference sources.
- THE
HISTORY OF FORD IN AUSTRALIA;
NORM DARWIN; 1986; ISBN 0-9592287-1-3; PUBLISHED BY EDDIE FORD
PUBLICATIONS P/L, NEWSTEAD,
VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA., and
- THE
HISTORY OF HOLDEN SINCE 1917; NORM DARWIN; 1983; ISBN 0-959-2287-05; PUBLISHED
BY EDDIE FORD PUBLICATIONS, NEWSTEAD,
VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
- The
two books above are mainly concerned with the cars produced by the two
companies over the years but there is some reference to wartime production
of CMPs. Some interesting photographs of some of the Australian CMP models
are included although both books are spoiled by the many badly mislabelled
photographs, for example, in the Ford book the vehicle labelled as a Ford
No 8 gun tractor is obviously a Chevrolet to the expert observer. Many other
photographs are wrongly captioned, in the Ford book, a wrecker is labelled
a machinery truck and vice versa. It is a pity that these books gave so
little emphasis to what was surely an extremely important period in
building Australia's
automotive manufacturing industry into what it is today. Still interesting
reading though.

MANUALS
- This is the list of CMP
manuals that I own or have had access to. My thanks also to Graeme
Jamieson sending me pics of some of his collection of manuals. There are many more and I
will add them when I get access to them or learn more about them.
Meanwhile take a look at
. Alex Blair of Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada
offers superb reproductions of original military manuals including a large
number of CMP manuals. I have purchased a Ford CMP parts manual and I can
highly recommend the quality of the manual and of Alex's service.
. FORD INSTRUCTION BOOKS FOR SPECIAL PATTERN VEHICLES . This was the
name that the British initially gave to CMP vehicles. Covers most major
and minor repairs as well as operating instructions.
. FORD F15 DRIVERS HANDBOOK.
. FORD ILLUSTRATED ARMY PARTS CATALOGUE 1940 - 1942 , My copy is
one of Alex Blair's excellent reproductions.
. FORD F.A.T. SPARE PARTS CATALOGUE.
. FORD MAINTENANCE MANUAL MB-F1. JUNE 1943 .
. CHEVROLET
ILLUSTRATED ARMY PARTS CATALOGUE 1940 - 1941.
.CHEVROLET C60S SPARE PARTS BOOK 1944.
.CHEVROLET C60L SPARE RARTS BOOK 1942.
.GM C60X SPARE PARTS BOOK 1944.
. GM MAINTENANCE MANUAL MB-C1. APRIL 1942. and
. GM MAINTENANCE MANUAL MB-C2. SEPT 1943. There are only
a few minor differences between the above two manuals that I can see.
Interestingly, neither manual refers to these vehicles as being
Chevrolets.
. DRIVERS HANDBOOK FOR CHEVROLET 1945. Australian
Military Forces book on driving all Chevrolet CMPs.
. THE 1945 AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES DRIVERS
INSTRUCTIONS FOR FORD CMP VEHICLES. This is a book I would
love to get a copy of. If anyone knows of a spare, please contact me .
- There are quite few sites
on the Web that cater to the flathead Ford V8. Many are just about using
them in hot rods but they are all interesting. Click here or here to have a look at a
couple of sites that may help you learn a little more about them. Go here to get a list of books about rebuilding
them. Typing "flathead and Ford" into your search engine will
undoubtedly find you more sites.
VIDEOS / MOVIES
- If you know of a movie or
video that features CMP vehicles then please EMAIL
me.
-
- "YEAR OF THE BLITZ" In March 2002, no less than 34 CMP trucks gathered together at
Corowa in New South Wales, Australia creating a record for the largest
numbers of privately owned Blitzes in
the one place. Keith Webb made this excellent video to record the event.
It not only contains vision of the record itself but has a number of
interesting pieces including Mike Cecil telling of the Blitz's history in
the Australian Army and Brian Gough giving a tour around his prototype C8A
HUP. This video is well worth the money for any CMP fan.
- "In the 1995 movie "OPERATION DUMBO DROP" starring
Danny Glover, army men must procure an elephant for Vietnamese villagers.
The elephant is transported on a blue 13 Cab Chev C60L, probably 1944 or
1945 (it has the lifting flanges on the front wheels). It has no hatch, is
fitted with duals on the rear and a non standard box and the brush guard
is missing, but it is the real thing." Thanks to Brian Gough
- The 1969 classic movie "THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN" contains an
early scene which shows the Germans preparing for their assault on Britain.
The authenticity of their equipment is a bit dodgy since the
"German" armoured vehicles seen in this scene are this pair of
Chevrolet C15TAs
.
- THE BEST OF MILITARY VEHICLES;
PRESENTED BY NIGEL JAMES AND GERRY BURR
- HISTORIC MILITARY
VEHICLE ROAD RUN; PRESENTED BY GERRY BURR. I purchased
these two British videos in the hope that I would see some restored CMPs
in Britain,
and if not, some interesting military vehicles of other types. Instead I
got a pair of very amateurish videos which mostly contained footage of the
presenters head and his interviewees with the occasional glimpse of a
military vehicles in the background. There was a couple of CMPs there
somewhere but, like the other vehicles, the talking heads blocked the
view. I think I could do better with my old Super 8, don't waste your
money on these videos.
- Rod Lewis found a movie
called "MUNSTERS GO HOME" in which
Herman Munster and family get involved in a car chase in England
including a roofless Cab 13 CMP truck. It is difficult to identify this
truck. In one of the head on shots the grille badge appears to be oval in
shape like a Ford but this scene is filmed in the dark so it is hard to
make out. In another scene the shape of the engine cover appears to be
like a Chevrolet but once again the shot is not clear. There are no grille
guards or overflow tanks to make identifying it easier.
- According to Brian Gough,
the 1997 movie "SEVEN
YEARS IN TIBET" starring Brad Pitt has a 15 cwt and a 60cwt CMP
in it.
- I received this mail from
Poul Brink in Denmark
"In a Danish film called "MAJORENS
OPPASSER" (The Major's Batman) from approx. 1965-66 a number of military
vehicles are included, among them two C60's and a C8A. It is a Danish
comedy featuring one of Danish film's greatest comedians, Dirch Passer. At
one passage in the film he has to take cover (and does so in the middle of
the road) while the vehicles pass over him. Some of these lorries are
C60's. In another section he is let loose in the motor yard among the
vehicles, and this is where the C8A is shown."
