Barwon
Sub Branch

The history of a small sub-branch of the State organisation of midwives in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

The Barwon Sub Branch began as MING (Midwives Information Network Group) in 1990. This small group of local midwives came together as a result of the Birthing Services Review in 1989. They met on common ground to provide each other with support and encouragement and by 1992 MING had became an official Sub Branch of ACMI (Australian College of Midwives) - hence the name Barwon Sub Branch. The branch is a voluntary, non profit concern.

Barwon Sub Branch aims to be supportive of all members and assist in clarifying the role of the midwife following the development of the midwive's Code of Practice. The Sub Branch also aims to promote self education, encourage politcal awareness and takes an active interest in community and hospital health provision concerning midwifery and nenonatal care.

In 2000 midwifery students and graduates were offerred the opportunity to be sponsored to attend the AGM of ACMI -Vic held in Warragul, Victoria. It is envisaged that this sponsorship will occur annually.

MEETINGS

Our meetings are held six weekly with the provision of a guest speaker at each meeting to provide further educational opportunities for midwives. International Midwives Day is celebrated each year on the 5th May with posters, balloons and information at each of the hospitals and community centers.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership is free to financial ACMI members and a gold coin donation is required of non financial members.

The enthusiastic support of dedicated members of the Barwon Sub Branch has enabled many midwives to meet regularly and benefit from guest speakers and each other. Barwon Sub Branch is a Sub Branch of ACMI, Victoria.
