Some of the gear you will need

Wheel radioWheel Radio

There are many radios to choose from. Most drivers use a wheel type. AM & FM models are available but remember that AM frequency crystals are much cheaper than FM ones. You will need 2 extra sets of crystals to avoid frequency clashes with other drivers in your race.
27Mhz, 29Mhz and 40Mhz are all acceptable in Australia.

Electronic Speed ControllerElectronic Speed Controller or ESC

Its’ purpose in the car is to smoothly regulate power to the electric motor as you use the throttle on the radio.
There are many of these available from hobby stores. Choose one that is easy to setup and has the capacity for the type of motor you intend to use.

Core MotorMotors

There are many to choose from. For a beginner I suggest a re-build able stock motor such as the Orion Core (approx $90). They are ready to race with bushes but I recommend fitting ball bearings because this will save on maintenance. If your budget is really tight then a Johnson 540 motor will do (approx $20).

BatteriesBattery packs

You can buy ready made stick packs or you can buy cells from battery suppliers and build your own packs.
Recommend 1700mah or higher.

Battery ChargerAutomatic battery charger

This is a must if you want to get the best from your batteries. There are many models that work from 240 volt AC and 12 volt DC power sources.
