Unique Bradman
Item

BRADMAN, SIR DONALD.
To Mary, on his 21st birthday.
A fully signed, long, and interesting
entry in Bradman's own hand on the occasion of his 21st Birthday
on the 27th August 1929, in an autograph book owned by Mary
Gjedsted. She was the daughter of Henry and Mildred Gjedsted:
Henry was the secretary of the J. C. Williamson theatre Company
of Sydney. The entry is eleven lines long, and addressed to
"Dear Mary" There are over 80 other entries in the
well used album, mostly friends and relatives, but including
Peter Dawson, the singer and Len W. Lower, the humourist. The
album itself is well worn, with both covers detached, the contents
loose. The pages themselves are clean enough: that with the
Bradman entry is slightly browned on the left hand edge, but
is overall good and clean.
A very early and revealing
manuscript, written just nine months and four tests after his
test debut with the Australian cricket team. In the entry Sir
Donald outlines briefly his life philosophy by quoting a few
lines of poetry, and then writes down what they mean to him
and how he applies the principles expounded to his own life.
Bradman was in Sydney in the winter of 1929, but so far we have
not been able to discover where he spent his 21st birthday,
and in what circumstances he would have met Mary Gjedsted. A
rare, charming and unique piece of Bradman memorabilia, giving
rich insight into the developing cricketer's attitudes and beliefs.
AUD $3000.00
