by the Women's Press, London, 1993. From
"Evolution Annie", the title story of the
collection:
Call me Annie, Evolution Annie. Some listen to my tale. Let
me tell you the story of our beginnings ... When we first
fell out of the trees, there was great consternation. "This
is it," said Father, "This is a sign from above
that we must embark upon a long and dangerous journey."
"That's a good idea," Mother agreed. "Why don't
you and the boys go off and do all that, and we'll sit here..."
While the boys battled, Mother sat underneath a tree and taught
us everything she knew..."
This story was published in Dale Spender (ed) Heroines.
The book was set one year for the higher school certificate
examination in West Australia, and students had a question
about my story on their exam paper.
Evolution Annie made the long short list of the
James Tiptree, Jr. Award in 1993.
