The Netherby Brothers

This is the home page of the Netherby Brothers.

The Netherby Brothers are Trevor Shard and Greg Leon

Trevor is a perceptive lyricist and an accomplished composer. He sings lead vocals and is a multi-instrumentalist, playing Martin and Carson-Crickmore 6-string guitars, a Taylor 355ce 12-string, all in many alternate tunings. His other talents include harmonica, percussion, keyboards, a Maton electric guitar, bass guitar…

Greg’s musical collaboration with Trevor is subtle but ever-present.  As well as co-producing much of their recorded material, on the performing side, he sings backing vocals, plays Maton’s flagship "Messiah" 6 & 12 string guitars, a mandola exquisitely hand-crafted by Dan Dubrowski, and a Washburn mandolin.

The Netherby Brothers write, play and produce their own brand of contemporary folk music with an emphasis on vocal harmonies and a foundation of finger picking style guitar.  It's Original, Contemporary, Music, with strong Acoustic roots.  With an eye to the future and an ear to the past, the Netherby Brothers’ songs paint pictures of real people and places, drawn from a lifetime of experience in Australia and travel to the far-flung corners of the globe.  As keen observers of the human experience their songs touch on matters of faith, life, philosophy, and inter-personal relationships.

Well, where did two years go? In 2005 we decided to put performing on hold for a while (apart from a few gigs - see the Gigs page), to focus on recording some of our new material.  We spent a few weekends up at Lily’s Farm studios, Wheatsheaf, in the central highlands of Victoria, Australia .  The fruits of our labours can be heard on our new CD “Other Tracks”.

Aptly named, “Other Tracks” is a collection of material we’ve been performing over the past few years.

The transition from purely acoustic to electric (a la Dylan late 60’s) has allowed us to use a broader spectrum of sound and move beyond the finger-picking style of “Songs from the Wood”.  Some songs which seemed to lack a bit of “oomph” in the acoustic setting, have now got “oomph” in spades.

The arrangements too have taken a technological leap forward, thanks to digital multi-tracking. Utilising state of the art digital recording and programming we’ve been able to bring our acoustic songs to life with the addition of drums, bass, keyboards and electric guitars.  Along the way we discovered that it comes at somewhat of a price – time!  It took us a good 2 years months to finish the project.

We learned a few things, like – “less is more” and that a good set of ears is worth more than a lot of gadgetry.

In the true folk traditions of fostering one’s own cottage industry, “Other Tracks” was written, played, arranged, critiqued, recorded, mixed, mastered, photographed, designed and produced within the Netherby Brothers family.

The songs continue in the vein of our first CD, “Songs from the Wood”, touching on matters of life, faith, people and places. TAs for the songs, I still don’t know where the songs come from, but come they do. As long as they keep coming, we have breath in our lungs and people who want to listen to us, then the Netherby Brothers will keep making music. Please enjoy!
