Dr Jean Callaghan

is a freelance voice expert, working as teacher, researcher and consultant in vocal performance and pedagogy. She gives individual lessons to performers and presenters working on vocal development, repertoire, and performance preparation; she advises singing teachers on pedagogy; she conducts research into the voice and the relationship between music and language; she gives masterclasses, lectures, workshops and short courses for singers, speakers, and teachers, in Australia and internationally.

Jean studied singing in Sydney, Perth and London, and has sung professionally in concert, recital and opera in Australia, England and Germany. She holds advanced performance diplomas in singing, a PhD in vocal pedagogy, and a second postgraduate research degree in music and language theory. She has taught singing privately and in various universities and colleges, most recently as Associate Professor of Singing at the University of Western Sydney. For UWS she designed and delivered Australia's first full postgraduate qualification in singing pedagogy.

She has taken leadership roles in the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Australian Voice Association, and the Australian Association for Research in Music Education.

She is the author of books, articles and papers, including the acclaimed Singing and Voice Science (2000), which interprets modern voice science research for singers and the professionals working with them. She is one of the research team that developed and distributes Sing&See™, specialised computer software to give acoustic feedback on the singing voice, and author (with Pat Wilson) of the accompanying manual, How to Sing and See (2004).
