The ENVIRONMENT..........this is what
sets Antarctica apart from anywhere else on Earth. (including its northern
cousin)
Some cold hard facts:
# The Antarctic ice cap has 29 million cubic kilometers of ice.
(that represents 90% of all the ice on the planet and between 60 to 70%
of all the worlds fresh water.)
# Only about 0.4% of Antarctica is not covered by ice.

Iceberg forming country.. Glacier not far from Mawson.
# at East Antarctic icecap: Mean summer temp is -30c. Mean winter around
-60c
# Lowest recorded temperature: -89 c (-128 f) July 1983 at Russian Vostok
Station.
# A wind speed of 320 kph was recorded at French Dumont d'Urville in 1972.

Two
favourite photographs of mine. Ships wake through melting sea ice heading to
Antarctica (Left) and wake 3 months later through re-freezing of seas. (Right)
(# hint ! makes a great wallpaper)
Dammit
!! I'll let some photographs "Speak for themselves"
